Believe it or not, little Midwestern Michigan is the 10th most populous state. But what do they do for fun?
If you live in Michigan, you may be stuck in a rut. If you’re elsewhere, you may have never considered Michigan as a place to travel. We’re here to offer some ideas that may make you reconsider.
We’ve assembled a list of some of our favorite things to do in Michigan for couples (or with friends if you’re single). Read on and start taking notes for your vacation plans!
1. Have a Date on the Beaches of Lake Michigan
What’s better than a day at the lake? It’s not quite the same as a beach day at the ocean, but if you’re going to Michigan, a lake day is an absolute must, especially if the weather is warm.
Spend a day lounging on the sandy shores of Lake Michigan with your partner and a good book. The water can be chilly, but if you’re a Midwesterner, you will adjust. Swimming in a cold lake is one of the top Michigan summertime activities.
You may decide that life at the lake is right for you. If you’re considering making the move to a lakeside home, it’s one of many great reasons to visit Saint Johns, a senior community right on Lake Michigan.
2. Experience the Northern Lights
Head to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (or the UP, as locals call it) for a chance to witness the amazing Northern Lights. Pay attention to weather patterns while you’re planning your trip to increase your chances of seeing nature’s best light show.
Plan a romantic evening under the stars and keep an eye out for this natural phenomenon during the darker (and usually colder) nights of the year. We recommend finding an area free of city lights. You should also bring a blanket and a picnic, as well as some hot drinks to keep you warm while you wait.
Worst case scenario, the lights won’t show but you’ll get to stargaze.
3. Explore Mackinac Island
Take a ferry to quaint Mackinac Island in Lake Huron with your partner. For an extra cute and old-fashioned touch, take a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride around the island.
Explore historic sites such as Fort Mackinac, visit charming shops for cute souvenirs, and indulge in delicious fudge-it’s Mackinac Island’s specialty!
The island also has a state park and an art museum, among other interesting features. It’s a great spot for a midwestern day trip.
If you visit in the summertime, be sure to check out the annual Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac Island!
